Orthofix spine products address the needs of patients at any point within the care cycle, offering operative, postoperative and nonoperative treatment for the total spine.
Since 1990, Orthofix bone growth stimulators have been used postoperatively to enhance the success rate of spinal fusions by stimulating the body’s own natural healing mechanism. These portable devices are intended to be used as part of a postsurgery home treatment program prescribed by a physician.
To date, more than 200,000 spine fusion patients have healed with bone growth stimulation from Orthofix. We market the first and most effective external bone growth stimulator for lumbar fusion, and recently we introduced the only FDA approved device to increase the rate of cervical fusion success.
With the addition of Blackstone Medical, Inc. in 2006, Orthofix added breakthrough treatment options for spine fusion, motion preservation and biologics.
Blackstone distributes the first of its kind, surgery-ready, bone graft product containing viable adult stem cells. This product is unique in the field of biologics because it provides all three bone growth properties: osteoconductivity, osteoinductivity and osteogenesis, and is free of donor matching or recipient immune expression concerns.
Other technologically advanced spinal implant and biological product offerings include: a system which simplifies anterior cervical spinal fusion by addressing rigid, semi-rigid, and unconstrained options with a single system, a vertebral body replacement utilizing PEEK radiolucent material, and a cervical allograft implant.
For non-operative treatment for chronic low back pain, Orthofix offers the only clinically validated spine treatment device that delivers external, self-administered spinal “unloading,” or upper body weight transfer, resulting in reduced pressure on the lumbar spine. This custom made vest uses patented, pneumatic lifts that decompress lumbar discs and relieve associated soft tissue structures which can significantly improve the quality of life for patients with lower back pain.
For those patients who require rigid external support for spine stabilization, we also manufacture spine bracing products designed to be comfortable as well as easy to apply and remove.
Neck and back pain is a common health problem for many patients throughout the world, and often requires surgical or non-surgical intervention for improvement. Neck and back problems are usually of a degenerative nature and are more prevalent among the older population. As the population ages, we believe physicians will see an increasing number of patients with degenerative changes who wish to have a better quality of life in their senior years than that experienced by previous generations.
